Area Employment
The broad based economy of Port Hueneme has historically performed better than the average California community. Regionally, the economy is driven by four primary sectors: defense, manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture. Locally, the Naval Base Ventura County and deep water commercial Port of Hueneme dominate the economic landscape.
Together, these two industries account for more than 14,364 jobs in Port Hueneme, with a combined payroll of $339 million. Direct and induced activity from the Navy and Port account for more than 28,070 jobs and $1.123 billion in combined economic impact throughout Ventura County.
U.S. Navy
The defense industry, together with civilian support
industries, are significant factors in the area's economy. Port Hueneme serves as
headquarters for the USNCBC, home of the "Pacific Seabees." The Naval
Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme occupies more
than half of the total land area of Port Hueneme and shares its military wharfs with the
adjacent deep-water harbor. Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu and California
Air
National Guard are located just six miles southeast of Port Hueneme.
Port of Hueneme
The commercial Port of Hueneme
is the only
deep-water harbor between Los Angeles and San Francisco. In the fiscal year ending June
30, 1995, approximately $2.5 billion worth of cargo passed through the Port, making it the
fourth busiest in the State. The port serves as an import/export station for break-bulk,
neo-bulk, and dry-bulk cargo. In addition, the port serves as a staging area for offshore
oil operations in nearby Santa Barbara Channel, provides space for local sport and
commercial fishing industries, and is home to the largest dockside refrigeration storage
facility on the West Coast. Among the Port's many advantages are its U.S. Customs Port of
Entry and Foreign Trade Zone designations.
